WFN & Wildfire Recovery
Westbank First Nation (WFN) is a self-governing Nation and an integral part of the Greater Westside community. As one of eight communities in the syilx/Okanagan Nation, WFN has a vibrant culture and is a significant economic driver in the region. Visitors can experience syilx culture at the Sncewips Heritage Museum or by observing the public art throughout the community. WFN's governance and economic development have played a key role in shaping modern West Kelowna.
The summer of 2023 left a lasting mark on the community. The McDougall Creek wildfire was a devastating event that forced thousands to evacuate and resulted in the loss of homes. The fire scorched nearly 14,000 hectares, significantly impacting areas like Rose Valley Regional Park and neighbourhoods along Westside Road. The landscape in some areas has been visibly altered, serving as a constant reminder of the event.
In the years since, the community's resilience has been remarkable. Recovery efforts have been ongoing, with residents rebuilding and restoration work taking place in affected parks.
